Four Virtual Summer Camps to Explore with Your Kids

Summer Camps These free, virtual summer camps offer kids a chance to make projects, investigate ideas, and explore the world. Parents, grandparents, older siblings, or babysitters can act as virtual camp counselors — leading and learning — alongside “campers.” While no substitute for the pool or the park, virtual camp can be a great way to keep kids occupied during a “staycation” or between their other activities. Check out these sites that are easily tailored for kids’ individual interests:

  • PBS Parents — For ages 3-9, with an emphasis on summer reading, offers a variety of practical, step-by-step plans to incorporate books into the dog days of summer.
  • Start with a Book — For ages 6 and up, this site offers a long list of themes, such as Art, Night Sky, and Weather Report, for kids to explore.
  • DIY — For ages 7 and up, this site offers dozens of skill-based activities (which it calls “challenges”) in a variety of categories, including Art, Business, and Engineering, that kids can do year-round — with camps and shorter courses for the summer.
  • Make: Online — For ages 12 and up, it’s a free site, but materials cost extra. Weekly camps are based on themes such as Far Out Future and Flight.
