Flint Hills Tradition, Country Style

The small town of Beaumont was established along side the Frisco railroad. It became an important shipping point for area cattle ranchers as well as a switch point for the branch line that ran from Beaumont to Enid, Oklahoma.

The railroad water tower located at the south end of Beaumont is all that remains to remind people of the depot, round house, shipping yards and rail crews that once worked there.

By contrast several pioneer cattle ranches survive and are located in the four townships surrounding Beaumont. The ancestors of the historic ranches arrived during the 1870's and 80's. These remaining working cattle ranches are owned and operated by direct heirs of the families.

These facts are of some note but often overlooked is the culture of the community found throughout the hills. A neighbor in the Flint Hills doesn't necessarily live next door, but may live 10 or 20 miles away.

It is not uncommon to find ranchers, cowboys, wives and kids gathering to help a neighbor and share a common bond with those who love cattle, the land and people.

This sense of community remains today and is this spirit of shared need the Beaumont Community Association was founded. Citizens of Beaumont and four surrounding townships are joined in an effort to support needed projects within the community. The fondest hope of this organization is that funds be raised to acquire a building to use as a Community Center.

The sale of baked goods and a reprint of a historic 1950 cookbook are ongoing projects and to enhance this effort the Lewis brothers Daryl and Glenn have offered their ranch to facilitate the Beaumont Cowboy Classic Pasture Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held August 28th, tee off time is set for 10:00 a.m. Four to a team, 9 Hole Golf best ball scratch is the order of the day, come as a team of four, join one or play as an individual. A $50.00 donation to the Beaumont Community Association entitles players to golf and a Brisket-Bar-B-Q, entertainment and prizes will be given to the winning golfers. The 9 Hole Tennis Ball Tournament/Scramble, two person team $30.00 will include the Brisket-Bar-B-Q and entertainment, with prizes. Limited 30 teams.

Spectators are encouraged to come, $10.00 charge to include the Bar-B-Q and entertainment in the evening. Lunch of gourmet sandwich's, wraps, and drinks will be available on the grounds and the brisket dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. A live band will provide entertainment.

The Lewis Ranch is located east of Beaumont on Highway 400, turn North at the Greenwood Co. Road marked C50, follow the county road North as it jogs toward a rural water tower.
